El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua meet around the Gulf of Fonseca. On the Salvadoran side, boat trips take you among volcanic islands including Meanguera, Meanguerita, Conchagüita, Punta Zacate or Zacatillo, and Martín Pérez. It is a very different outing from a day on the Surf City beaches.

Allow time in the far east for La Unión, Conchagua, or an island outing. Visit San Miguel or El Cuco on separate days rather than trying to see them all during one transfer.
- Mainland base: Use La Unión for boat-departure logistics, waterfront time, and an eastern overnight.
- Island day: Choose one island or boat outing with a current local operator rather than treating the whole gulf as a quick viewpoint stop.
- Eastern city stop: Leave time to stop in San Miguel for a meal, supplies, or an overnight on the long eastern route.
- Coast extension: Add El Cuco only with another eastern night; the gulf and beach coast should not be compressed into one transfer day.

The Gulf of Fonseca spreads between El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua, with volcanic islands rising across the water. On the Salvadoran side, most trips begin in La Unión at the main pier or Los Coquitos. The views can be extraordinary, but the boat, weather plan, destination, and return time need to be settled before you leave shore.
The Gulf is worth the journey when a day among islands and volcanoes is high on your list. For an early boat, sleep in La Unión the night before, especially if you are coming from San Salvador or joining a fixed departure.

One way to enjoy it
A relaxed day on the Gulf
Confirm the boat and meeting point before breakfast. Once that is settled, the day can unfold at the pace of the water and weather.
Night before
Confirm the captain or operator, departure point, islands, time on land, life jackets, shade, drinking water, and price. Ask who decides whether the weather is safe for the trip.
On the water
Leave enough time for Conchagüita, an island village, fishing life, and the distant volcanoes. The Gulf is far more enjoyable when it is not reduced to a rushed checklist.
Return
Keep daylight and road margin after docking. If the boat returns late, eat and sleep in La Unión rather than forcing a long evening drive.
