El Tazumal Archaeological Park is in Chalchuapa, Santa Ana Oeste. Its structures belonged to a Maya settlement occupied from about 100 to 1200 AD and abandoned around 1200 AD. Allow time for the museum as well as the outdoor remains.

Give Tazumal more than a pyramid photo
Tazumal’s Structure 1 rises about 24 meters and reflects many phases of construction, but the park’s story also includes a ball court, drainage engineering, a carved stela, and the site museum. Casa Blanca is only about 1.5 kilometers away, so seeing both is tempting, though each deserves more than a hurried walk.
Tazumal is the archaeological centerpiece of a day in Chalchuapa. Casa Blanca adds an indigo workshop and archaeological window when both parks are open and you have time for a proper break between them.

A satisfying Chalchuapa archaeology loop
Tazumal tells the larger architectural story. Afterward, lunch and Casa Blanca’s smaller museum setting provide a welcome change of pace.

Walk the main complex slowly enough to see how the pyramid, temple, ball court, and drainage fit together from more than the famous angle.
